Protea...flowers beyond the ordinary

Protea Bouquet Conditioning

Most living things respond favorably to a little care and attention, and Proteas are no different. One of the advantages of the flowers in the Proteaceae family is their long vase-life. This makes them a favorite with many flower arranging professionals. To get the maximum life from these extraordinary flowers, you need to condition them.

Step 1

Rehydrate your Protea Bouquet as soon as possible. This is done by trimming approximately 1” off the end of the stems. Most Protea have hard, woody stems. To achieve maximum water absorption, split the stem ends with a sharp knife or gently crush the end of the stem with a hammer. Place immediately into a bucket of tepid water and leave for several hours, or even overnight if possible.

Step 2

In order for the Protea to retain their beauty, they need sugar. Sugar is absorbed from the leaves during photosynthesis, and therefore the leaves tend to turn brown as the sugar is passed through to the flowers. When this happens, simply remove the darker leaves. In order to prolong this stage from setting in, we supplied you with four (4) Nutriflor sachets. Add one (1) sachet per bouquet, or two (2) sachets if the bouquets are combined, to fresh water and place the bouquets in your vase.

Step 3

Re-conditioning. After about a week, trim another inch off the stems and add the remaining Nutriflor sachets to fresh water.

Proudly display your Protea Bouquet in a prominent area. Avoid direct sunlight and check the water level frequently. Enjoy your Protea Bouquet.

The Protea blooms also dry very well. Hang the blooms upside down in a dark place until they are completely dry. Arrange together for a long-lasting dry arrangement.
